my neighbor asked me if my garden was thriving like we were in some backyard competition and i had to smile and say oh yes while my flowers looked like sad little sticks in the dirt, totally forgot to water them all summer and now i just feel like a gardener fraud.

sat in my tiny living room, same mismatched furniture for years, when a coworker casually mentioned their promotion and new salary, and it hit different because all i could think was how my biggest win lately was managing to get my plants to stay alive for a month.
